Empowered to Witness: A Reflection on Acts 1:8
In Acts 1:8, Jesus declares, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me… unto the uttermost part of the earth” (KJV). These final words before His ascension outline both the promise and purpose for every believer: the empowering of the Holy Spirit and the call to be His witnesses.
This power (dunamis) is not just for miracles, but for boldness, clarity, and strength to live and speak as Christ’s ambassadors. The Holy Spirit is God’s abiding presence within us—guiding, convicting, and enabling us to reflect Christ in both word and deed.
Jesus’s call to witness begins in “Jerusalem”—our homes, families, and close communities. It then expands to “Judaea and Samaria”—our broader society and those who may be different from us culturally or spiritually. Finally, it reaches “the uttermost part of the earth,” reflecting God’s heart for all people to know Him.
